Caring for a baby is not only physically demanding. There is also an invisible mental load: remembering feeding times, appointments, supplies, messages, household tasks, family needs and countless small decisions that rarely appear on a to-do list.
This constant planning can be exhausting, even when a mother seems to be “managing well” from the outside. Support can therefore mean more than helping with practical tasks. Sometimes, the most valuable question is: “What is taking up space in your mind right now?” Helping organise a task, preparing something in advance or simply reducing the number of decisions she has to make can create real breathing room.
Through HUGS-Pro, Voluntary Support Workers are encouraged to look beyond visible needs and recognise the less obvious pressures that can shape the first months of motherhood. Meaningful support is not always about doing more – sometimes it is about helping a mother carry less.
