When a new mother shares how she feels, she does not always need advice or an immediate solution. Sometimes, what matters most is having someone who listens with patience, attention and without judgement.
Active listening can help mothers feel heard and respected during a period that often brings major emotional and practical changes. Simple actions such as giving someone time to speak, asking open questions and acknowledging their feelings can strengthen trust and make support more meaningful.
Through HUGS-Pro, Voluntary Support Workers are encouraged to develop communication skills that help them respond with empathy and sensitivity. Good support is not about having all the answers – it is about being present, recognising when additional help may be needed, and helping mothers feel less alone in the first months of motherhood.
